The Good News: Bubbe is less likely to openly ask if you'll meet your future husband, a nice IDF soldier, on your scheduled Birthright trip. The Bad News: The FAA !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! prohibiting American air carriers from flying to Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv.
The ban, spurned by a Hamas rocket exploding near the airport and beginning at 12:15 PM EST, came with the following statement:
Due to the potentially hazardous situation created by the armed conflict in Israel and Gaza, all flight operations to/from Ben Gurion International Airport by U.S. operators are prohibited until further advised.
The explosions follow !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . Ben Gurion does not host any IDF aircraft.

Birthright is fun, and I'm glad I did it when I could, but I think birthright trips are gunna go on a bit of a hiatus.

I should have done it a while ago. I'm 25, so I only have two more years. I hope they do officially put them on hold because of all this crap, I don't want to miss out but I really don't want to go into what is essentially an active warzone.

Israel allways has a bit of a military feel to it. Probably has to do with the IDF soldgers walking around in uniform and with a rifle. Also the Kubutz we went to was basically a military base. But a warzone is diffrent.

Wellllll, one year they decided to diversify, so my pledge class is about 50-50 Jewish-Catholic, but apparently we suck so after that year, less than 5 non-Jews per 50 person pledge class.
And I can't recall but it's been brought up before.

It's always in conflict, but something like this seems a bit extreme for a holiday.
Hopefully it calms down soon.

My sister is over in haifa right now planning her wedding with her Israeli fiance, and my parents are supposed to go there pretty soon. I hope things calm down. my wife hasn't been yet and does not know the joys of Jaffa sweets or Booza Rukubs yet.

If there is I haven't found it. I think it might come from the issue that I always have at least a 6 hour interrogation everytime I go through ben gurion airport. I hand them my passport and say "let me guess you want me to wait in that room over there right?" thankfully the are usually a little easier on my little sister. Only 4 hours average for her.

I have a story regarding immigration security: My cousin is a travel writer for lonely planet, he has dual american and Israeli citizenship. When entering vietnam for an assignment, they pulled him aside, interrogated him and banned him from ever coming back to vietnam. I guess they thought he was a spy.

did he at least get to do his work in that country or did they just send him back? if they just sent him back same day that would almost literally be the worst.

he was just writing a revision on a book he already wrote. The revision just got cancelled, he got sent back the same day.
